Today is the summer solstice. It marks the start of summer for some; for others, it is the highpoint of neo-pagan celebration. Worship of the sun has an ancient history (Stonehenge this morning). Think about it. If a person does not believe in an all-powerful, transcendent God, then one of the likely alternatives for people to “worship” is the sun. In contrast, Malachi 4:2 gives us a wonderful image of the healing energy of the sun as a blessing of the one true God (not a god in itself): “But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall.”
