An Unexpected Encounter

A new look at a familiar story. What was really going on in Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well might surprise us. What Jesus offers us might surprise us as well.

An Unexpected Encounter John 4:1-30; 39-42

Usually when we encounter Jesus for the first time what we find in him is stunning, compelling, and arresting. It is the unexpected encounter we all need, as was the case with a woman in Samaria.

  • Jesus goes into “enemy” territory (vss. 1-6)
  • Jesus engages when we least expect it (vss. 7-9)
  • Jesus offers fresh life (vss. 10-15)
  • Jesus exposes our deepest realities (vss. 16-19)
  • Jesus invites us to worship in spirit and truth (vss. 20-26)
