Kingdom Come

Throughout his narrative, Matthew portrayed the kingdom of God in varied ways: God’s kingdom is his sovereign rule over all of creation. In Jesus, God’s kingdom has been inaugurated and will one day be consummated. The kingdom of God is mysterious. It begins small and is barely noticed, like a mustard seed in the ground. A study done in 2012 by researchers at Stanford University examined the feeling of awe and its effect on people’s experience of life. They found that awe enhances a person’s sense of well-being. They also found that people are willing to volunteer their time to help others, tend to focus less on material things, and experience greater life satisfaction. The findings of this study are not surprising. We know from everyday life that experiences of awe and amazement can inspire us to do or try things we thought to be beyond ourselves. Awe can bring great perspective or clarity, and can both humble and inspire us.

“When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.” 2 Samuel

La frase viene de la oración del Padre Nuestro, que es el patrón de la relación con Dios que Jesús manda a todos sus discípulos. “Venga tu reino, hágase tu voluntad en la tierra como en el cielo” (Mateo 6:10). Esta no es una mansa y dócil oración. Es una exclamación y suplica. Expresa nuestro anhelo más profundo que las cosas pueden ser diferentes de lo que son. Hay muchas personas, organizaciones y otras fuerzas que tratan de ejercer control sobre nosotros – pero hay solo un bueno, benevolente y amoroso Rey. “Venga tu Reino” significa: “Dios, por favor reina en nuestras vidas. Dirígenos. Enséñanos. Protégenos. Comándanos. Haz nuestras vidas, nuestras comunidades y nuestras iglesias mejores de lo que son.
